To A Son

Son,

if you’re going to fall in life, fall from the top. Live for what makes you happy. Work to live not live to work. Spend time with those you hold closest to you. Travel. Take it all in, spend time doing so. Look into the sun and think of me from time to time, look past the clouds on a rainy day. Never tip a waiter, we’re not meant to subsidize what the employer should be putting into their wages. Marry for love and whatever love may be to you, hold it close. Hold the door like a gentlemen. Arrive tastefully early to assess your surroundings; you can learn a lot and harness a good feel for things like this. When conversing be sure everyone has means to partake. Mouth closed when chewing unless comical and in good taste; you will know when. Only fight if you’re going to lose something worth your life, take time to evaluate this. Love your children as much as I’ve loved you. Time is the only thing with any real value, so make the best of it. Be aware that no matter how well you know someone that everyone is capable of anything. Learn guitar so when you read poetry out loud it won’t be so lonely. Smile, smiling is contagious so spread it to those around you.

The world isn’t all rainbows and sunshine, but when you find them, take awhile and rest upon them.
