Camille Craig
hospital nurse surgery late

Before It's Too Late

It has been experienced many times before
The hospital beds and sterile floors
Walls lined with children’s cartoons,
in an attempt to forget what will happen soon.
The nurse walks in to deliver the shot
“Calm down little one, this won’t hurt a lot.”
The doctor places the mask over my spotless mouth
drifting into a deep sleep, holding on to my health.
When I awake I feel quite different.
Still unaware to what has occurred.
I am pulled back down the blank halls,
into the room with familiar walls.
The medicine man has done all he can
but even they have no master plan.
I can’t help but ask in my fragile state,
Will this end before it’s too late?
